25 years ago today, Madonna reached the top spot of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles chart with "Like a Virgin".
In its sixth week on the chart, the first single from the album with the same name became the first of Madonna's 12 number-one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 so far. "Like A Virgin" hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100, and hold the spot for six weeks.
Like a Virgin made its debut at the first MTV VMA's in 1984, where Madonna appeared on stage atop a giant wedding cake dressed in a wedding dress (adorned with the infamous "Boy Toy" belt buckle) and veil. The song has also been included in five of Madonna's eight tours, and in 2008's S&S tour, Madonna sang Like a virgin several times as the request song.
